Witnessing trains passing through buildings at Liziba Station, watching trains traverse bridges to pierce through clouds and mist, riding the "train heading into spring" amidst a sea of blossoms in the mountains... In recent years, Chongqing's rail transit has frequently surged in popularity, becoming a world-renowned symbol of the mountainous city. Now, this symbol is set to shine even brighter.
On the afternoon of June 6th, an MOU signing ceremony was successfully held at the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, marking the official launch of a three-party collaboration between Chongqing Rail Transit Operation Co., Ltd. (hereafter referred to as Chongqing Rail Transit Operation), Singapore MSI Global Pte. Ltd., and Yantron Technology. The three parties will jointly promote straddle-type monorail technology and the development of its entire industrial chain, further deepening cooperation between Chongqing and Singapore in the field of urban rail transit. This not only brings new opportunities for all parties, but also lays a solid foundation for creating a new model of strategic cooperation in infrastructure connectivity under the Belt and Road Initiative.
According to Le Mei, Chairman of Chongqing Rail Transit Operation, Chongqing's straddle-type monorail is a model of integrated transportation and cultural tourism. "Starting from 70% localization in manufacturing and production for Chongqing Rail Transit Line 2, to now achieving 100% localization, Chongqing's straddle-type monorail has meticulously built an industrial chain ecosystem with a complete 'production, education, research, construction, manufacturing, and application' structure and collaborative development," said Le Mei. She stated that Chongqing's monorail industry is driven by technological innovation, continuously enhancing its core competitiveness. In recent years, Chongqing's monorail industrial chain enterprises have actively "gone global", most notably engaging in extensive exchanges and mutual visits with ASEAN countries such as Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore. This has fostered technical exchanges and the sharing of experiences in urban rail transit, while also laying a solid foundation for future cooperation.
"We are very optimistic about this cooperation. We hope that through this collaboration, the rail transit brands of both Chongqing and Singapore can develop better and gain worldwide acclaim," said Cai Chongqing, President of Singapore MSI Global Pte. Ltd. and Senior Consultant of the Land Transport Authority of Singapore. He stated that the three parties will leverage their respective strengths and join forces through flexible and diverse cooperation methods. They will deepen collaboration in multiple fields — including rail transit, infrastructure, urban renewal, and intelligent management — with the aim of building a sustainable and comprehensive strategic partnership, and ultimately achieving mutual benefit, win-win outcomes, and shared development.
"This in-depth collaboration is a cross-border endeavor which integrates technology and sustainability," said Yang Jin, CEO of Yantron Technology and Chairman of T.Y. Lin International (China). Yang Jin emphasized that the combination of MSI's global resources and international advantages, Chongqing Rail Transit Operation's leading industrial chain and operational experience, and Yantron Technology's "globalized & innovation-oriented" consulting services can achieve a synergistic effect greater than the sum of its parts (1+1+1>3). The trio will not only share cutting-edge international technological resources and experience to create landmark projects, but also explore the application of low-carbon materials and energy recycling models to support the achievement of "dual carbon" goals in rail transit. Furthermore, they will strengthen cooperation in key areas such as intelligent operation and maintenance to promote the wider application of straddle-type monorails.
Since the official opening of Chongqing's first straddle-type monorail line in 2005, it has developed into the world's largest monorail system in terms of construction, operational mileage, as well as passenger volume.
Zou Jiaju, Director of the Rail Transit Construction Division of the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, stated that after years of construction and development, Chongqing's rail transit has formed a local industrial system represented by the straddle-type monorail. This signing marks a significant step for Chongqing in gradually opening channels and pathways to export its rail transit industry to the world, leveraging the China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity (CCI). "We will strengthen government-enterprise collaboration and industrial cooperation, support enterprises in leveraging their advantages, and vigorously implement the 'Six Major Initiatives for Urban Construction', so as to increase the modal share of rail transit and empower the modern governance of megacities," said Zou Jiaju.
Leaders and guests from the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Chongqing City Transportation Development & Investment Group, and T.Y. Lin International (China), among others, attended the signing ceremony.
