Introduction

The Caiyuanba Yangtze River Bridge connects Yuzhong District and Nan’an District of Chongqing. The total length of the route is 4 kilometers, with the bridges spanning a total of 1,866 meters. Among this, the main bridge covers a length of 880 meters, with the main span measuring 420 meters.

The bridge features a two-level design:

The upper level accommodates six traffic lanes and pedestrian walkways on both sides.

The lower level carries a dual-track straddle-type monorail for Railway Line 3.

The total investment in the project was approximately 1.36 billion RMB, and the bridge was opened to traffic in October 2007.

The main bridge structural system is a combination of a Y-shaped rigid frame and a tie-arch system, making it currently the largest multi-functional bridge of its type in the world accommodating both road and rail traffic. It was the first time in China to adopt a composite system integrating plate truss structure, rigid frame, and tie-arch system in a long-span arch bridge.

Key features include:

Large segment integral hoisting technology, with the heaviest segment weighing 360 tons, the heaviest of its kind worldwide at the time.

No vertical supports in the side spans, creating a more streamlined and open structural appearance.

Y-shaped rigid frame piers made of prestressed concrete at the arch springs, enhancing impact resistance and flood resilience.

Tie rods are designed for high maintainability and easy replacement.

The project was awarded the 2009 Zhan Tianyou Civil Engineering Award.
